Position Summary:

When working on software projects, Senior Software Test Engineers are expected to understand the specifications and schedules under which the project operates. They are expected to work efficiently with their project managers, other developers, and testers to produce high quality test plans and test cases. When specifications are incorrect, inconsistent, or could be improved, they are expected to discuss changes with project managers and developers. When design documents are insufficient to write detailed test cases and/or test fixtures, they are expected to discuss alternatives with project managers. For all projects, Senior Software Test Engineers are expected to develop test plans, write and maintaining test cases, execute test plans and test cases, and report on the results of the test plan. They are expected to write and maintain automated test cases and the automated test framework, and develop test fixtures for high-risk software modules. Senior Software Test Engineers are expected to check in their test code and test case documents into source control on a regular basis. They are expected to understand how the quality system operates and work actively with their teams to move software through the quality system and help with its release to external and internal customers.

NOTE: This position is solely on-site.

Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Perform all work in compliance with company policy and within the guidelines of BioFire Defense’s Quality System.
  2. Understand BioFire’s technical mission.
  3. Read and interpret software specifications and detailed design documents.
  4. Write, execute, and maintain test plans and test cases, and report on the results of the test plans.
  5. Develop and maintain automated test frameworks and test cases.
  6. Ensure, whenever possible, that software defects that are discovered can be reproduced so that they can be fixed.
  7. Use BioFire Defense software products during development for the purpose of discovering defects.
  8. Ensure the proper documentation of software defects through software defect tracking software used by BioFire.
  9. Complete projects on time with minimal supervision.
  10. Continually update technical knowledge and skills.

Principal Decisions:

  1. Determine whether software is in compliance with specifications.
  2. Assess issues of usability that may not be covered by specifications.

Supplemental Data:

  1. Software testers are responsible for the quality of the software and for bringing software defects and issues to the attention of software management.
  2. Software test engineers have both testing and software development skills, which enables them to automate testing tasks.

Training and Education:

  • Requires a B.S. in a scientific field or related equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in Software QA.


  • Requires experience using test automation software, experience writing and maintaining both manual and automated tests,
  • Experience with one or more of the following computer languages: C++, C#, Javascript, or MATLAB,
  • Experience with web-based testing, especially in React,
  • Experience with cloud-based testing, especially in AWS,
  • Experience with Windows OS Image development / testing,
  • Experience with cybersecurity testing (STIG) scans, implementation, and documentation,
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and electronic health record technology.

Skills:   (Special skills required; e.g., negotiation, technical writing; statistical evaluation)

Writing skills:

  • Technical writing experience.

Programming skills:

  • Windows-OS experience,
  • Linux-OS experience.

Basic Engineering skills:

  • Version control system (source control),
  • Defect tracking,
  • Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) systems.
